Murals
All murals on this page have been done in “modified acrylic tempera”
Because most of modern-day churches are fabricated using gypsum board and gypsum plaster, true Frescos using traditional methods are impossible. Thus a modern solution to replicate the subtle and transparent likenesses of ancient frescoes had to be created. Using my own hand-ground mineral pigments (like those used for panel icons) mixed with an acrylic emulsion, a superior product to conventional acrylic paints has been achieved.
Another step is also necessary when working on gypsum surfaces. They must be reinforced with strong synthetic canvas, and then covered with two coats of a special gesso. Once the mural is completed it is covered with a protective varnish, which waterproofs and gives a matt-look (non-reflectdive) finish to the composition. This last step also provides additional durability and longevity.
